Dear Parents and Guardians:

The summer is a great time to relax and enjoy reading at your own pace about topics that interest you. The more we read the better readers and writers we become and the more we learn about the world. Books can be windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors - helping us see into others’ experiences, reflect our own lives, and step into new worlds.

In addition, students who read actively, often, and widely

Increase their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Experience greater success in school by developing literacy skills that support critical reading of all texts.

Broaden their experience, knowledge, and understanding of the larger world.

Develop lifelong reading habits.

In order to promote reading proficiency, continued reading must occur throughout the summer. By doing so, our students will become more capable and enthusiastic readers and will find greater success in school. Therefore, students attending Charles Boehm, Pennwood, and William Penn Middle Schools are required to read at least one book of their choice over the summer.

While reading, students must take notes and/or complete the graphic organizer provided so they are prepared to discuss their books in small groups when school begins.

During the first week of school, students will meet with their peers to discuss their book.

Students will use this completed graphic organizer or their notes to guide their discussion and serve as a brainstorming tool that will be used to complete an in-class writing assignment.

Students will complete this assignment in their Language Arts class. They will earn 10 homework points for the completion of this graphic organizer or notes.

Students will earn performance credit for the book discussion and the writing assignment.

If you are looking for additional reading activities, the public libraries are an invaluable resource. In particular, the Levittown and Yardley free libraries offer fun activities designed to support summer reading. Digital texts are available over the summer at these resources: https://www.mackinvia.com and https://buckslib.org/e-library

Check out our summer reading newsletter for more information.

Let’s make reading an enjoyable habit! Have a happy and healthy summer!

Sincerely,
